Linseed Oil (CAS 8001-26-1) is a natural plant-derived drying oil obtained from the seeds of the flax plant (Linum usitatissimum). With high polyunsaturated fatty-acid content, it polymerises on exposure to air and finds major use in coatings, paints, varnishes, wood-protection, linoleum, printing inks and industrial raw materials.

Molecular formula
Not a single formula (mixture of triglycerides). Typical fatty acid composition includes α-linolenic acid (~50 %), oleic acid (~18–22 %), linoleic acid (~14–17 %), palmitic (~7 %), stearic (~3–5 %).

Mild, bland oil odour (in refined form). For raw or oxidised grades the odour may become rancid or stronger

Stable under recommended storage conditions; avoid strong reducing and oxidizing agents

Solubility
Insoluble (or very poorly soluble) in water. Soluble in organic solvents (e.g., hydrocarbons, alcohols) and miscible with many oils.
